The IRS has no single fax number. The right number depends on the form (SS-4, 2848, 8821) or, for a CP2000 notice, on the IRS location printed on your notice. Find it in the form instructions, on your notice, or in the SendFaxFast IRS fax directory. Then upload your PDF at sendfaxfast.com and fax it from $2.49 – no fax machine, no subscription.

This guide goes form by form. For the basics (Can you fax the IRS at all? Is it safe?), read our earlier article How to fax documents to the IRS.
Why there is no "one" IRS fax number
The IRS is organised by program and processing site. A fax for an EIN application goes to a different unit than a power of attorney or an underreporting notice. Sending to the wrong unit usually means your document is not processed on time – or not at all. Our directory lists each number with its purpose, who may use it, and a link to the official irs.gov source.
Form SS-4 (EIN application): Fax-TIN
The IRS runs a fax program for EIN applications, often called Fax-TIN. There are three numbers, and the one you use depends on your location:
| Your situation | Which SS-4 number |
|---|---|
| Business or residence in one of the 50 states or DC | The main SS-4 Fax-TIN number |
| No legal residence or business in any state or DC, faxing from inside the US | The separate SS-4 number for these applicants |
| No legal residence or business in any state or DC, faxing from outside the US | The international SS-4 number (not toll-free) |
The exact numbers are on the IRS directory page and in the Instructions for Form SS-4.
Two points to know:
- Fax-TIN numbers are only for EIN applications. Don't send other documents there.
- The EIN reply comes back by fax if you include a return fax number on the form. A single fax from SendFaxFast is send-only. If you want to receive the IRS reply by fax, you need a fax number that can receive – for example a plan with your own US fax number. Without a return fax number, check the SS-4 instructions for how the IRS sends your EIN instead.
Form 2848 (power of attorney) and Form 8821 (tax information authorization)
Forms 2848 and 8821 are faxed to the IRS CAF unit. There are separate numbers for eastern and western states; the form instructions explain which applies to you. Both numbers are in our IRS directory.
Tips for representatives and taxpayers
- Use the current revision of the form.
- Make sure all signatures and dates are present before you fax.
- Fax each authorization once. Duplicates slow processing.
CP2000 notice: use the location on your notice
A CP2000 notice proposes changes to your return because income reported to the IRS doesn't match your return. The IRS uses several processing locations, each with its own fax number. Look at the top left of your notice – it shows the location, for example Andover, MA, Atlanta, GA or Austin, TX. Use the number for that location. Our directory lists all CP2000 numbers by location.
What to include
- The response form from your notice, on top.
- Your signed statement and any supporting documents.
- Your name and the notice number on each page, so loose pages can be matched.
How to fax the IRS online, step by step
- Find the right number on your notice, in the form instructions, or in the IRS fax directory.
- Create one PDF. Scan or photograph the pages. Put the form or response page first. A free cover sheet is optional but helps.
- Count the pages. 1–5 pages cost $2.49, 6–20 pages $3.49, 21–40 pages $4.99.
- Go to sendfaxfast.com, upload the PDF, choose +1 and enter the 10-digit IRS number.

Is there one general IRS fax number?
No. The IRS uses different fax numbers for different forms and processing locations. Use the number on your notice or in the form instructions, or look it up in the SendFaxFast IRS directory.
Can I fax Form SS-4 to get an EIN?
Yes. The IRS accepts SS-4 by fax through its Fax-TIN numbers. Which number applies depends on whether your business or residence is in the 50 states or DC. The IRS states the EIN is generally returned by fax within about four business days if you give a return fax number.
Where do I fax a CP2000 response?
To the fax number for the IRS location shown at the top left of your CP2000 notice. Each location has its own number.

How do I prove I faxed the IRS?
