Who still asks for a fax in Australia?

Fewer organisations every year – but enough that most people run into it now and then:

  • Government: some ATO processes (for example private ruling applications), Centrelink International Services and Child Support from overseas. See How to fax the ATO.
  • Health: GPs, specialists, hospitals and pharmacies that still receive referrals and forms by fax.
  • Insurance, legal and property: claim forms, signed authorities, lease paperwork.
  • Overseas organisations asking Australian customers to fax back signed forms.

Fax at a shop or libraryPaper documents, travel, opening hoursIf you're nearby and have paper copies; ask in store about prices

For most households, a monthly subscription for one or two faxes a year doesn't make sense. That's the gap SendFaxFast fills.

Australian fax numbers: the format

Australian landline and fax numbers are written with a two-digit area code starting with 0, followed by eight digits:

Written in AustraliaRegionEnter in SendFaxFast
(02) xxxx xxxxNSW, ACT+61 2 xxxx xxxx
(03) xxxx xxxxVIC, TAS+61 3 xxxx xxxx
(07) xxxx xxxxQLD+61 7 xxxx xxxx
(08) xxxx xxxxSA, WA, NT+61 8 xxxx xxxx
The rule: choose +61 and drop the leading 0. Mobile numbers (starting 04) can't receive faxes – the send form warns you if a number looks like one.

How to send a fax online in Australia, step by step

  1. Scan or photograph your document. On iPhone, the Notes or Files app can scan to PDF; on Android, Google Drive can. A clear photo also works.
  2. Add a cover sheet if needed – free at sendfaxfast.com/fax-cover.php.
  3. Open sendfaxfast.com and upload the file (up to 100 pages, max. 10 MB).
  4. Choose +61 and enter the number without the 0.
  5. Send now or schedule for the recipient's business hours.
  6. Pay once by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal.
  7. Keep the delivery report from your email.
If the line is busy or the machine is switched off, SendFaxFast retries automatically. If delivery fails, you get a full refund.

Time zones and best sending times

Australia has three main time zones – AEST (east), ACST (central) and AWST (west) – and daylight saving only applies in some states and territories. A fax sent from Sydney at 5 pm reaches Perth in the middle of the afternoon, but a fax sent from Perth at 5 pm arrives in Sydney at 7 pm or 8 pm – after business hours. Government offices and practices often switch off fax machines in the evening, so aim for 8 am–5 pm in the recipient's time.

Faxing to Australia from overseas

From the US, Canada or New Zealand, it works the same: choose +61, drop the 0, send. SendFaxFast charges the same price for Australia as for the US or Canada.
