Quick answer

Use an online fax service in your browser. Scan or photograph the document, open sendfaxfast.com, upload the file, enter the recipient's fax number and pay for that one fax. The fax goes out over the regular phone network, so the recipient's fax machine receives it like any other fax. You don't need a fax machine, a phone line, an app or an account.

Most people need a fax two or three times a year: a form for the IRS, a records request to a doctor, a signed page for an insurer. Buying a fax machine for that makes no sense, and many homes don't have a landline anymore. You don't need either.

What do I need to send a fax without a fax machine?

  • A phone, tablet or computer with internet access
  • The document as a PDF, or a clear photo (JPG or PNG)
  • The recipient's fax number, ideally from their letter, form or website
  • A payment method: card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal

How does online faxing work?

You upload a file. The fax service converts it into fax pages and dials the recipient's fax number over the phone network. To the other side, it looks exactly like a fax from a machine. The recipient does not need to do anything special (see does the recipient need a fax machine?).

Step by step

  1. Get the document ready. If it's on paper, scan it with your phone: on an iPhone with the Notes or Files app (Scan Documents), on Android with the scan button in Google Drive. If it's a Word file or Google Doc, save it as a PDF first.
  2. Open sendfaxfast.com in any browser and upload the file. You can add several files; they are combined into one fax. If you need to sign, you can sign on screen right after uploading.
  3. Enter the fax number with the country code: +1 for the US and Canada, +61 for Australia and +64 for New Zealand (without the leading 0).
  4. Pay for that one fax. The fax usually goes out within a few minutes. You get a send report by email with date, time, fax number and an image of the first page.
