Quick answer

Save your document as a PDF (File → Export as PDF, or Print → Save as PDF), open sendfaxfast.com in Safari or Chrome, upload the PDF, enter the fax number, and pay. You get a send report by email when it's delivered. No fax modem, no app and no account needed. Up to 5 pages cost $2.89.

Older Macs could fax through an external modem and the print dialog. Modern macOS versions dropped that, and almost nobody has a phone line plugged into a MacBook anyway. The easy way today is to send the PDF through an online fax service right from your browser.

Step 1: Turn your document into a PDF

  • Pages, Word or Google Docs: File → Export To → PDF, or File → Download → PDF in Google Docs.
  • Any app that prints: press Cmd + P, click the PDF menu at the bottom left and choose Save as PDF.
  • Paper document: scan it with your iPhone (Notes → Scan Documents, or Continuity Camera from Finder: right-click → Import from iPhone → Scan Documents).

Step 2: Sign it if needed

Open the PDF in Preview, click the markup icon and use Sign. You can draw your signature on the trackpad or hold a signed paper up to the camera. More tips in how to sign a document before faxing. Whether a pasted signature is accepted is up to the recipient.

Step 3: Send it from Safari or Chrome

  1. Open sendfaxfast.com.
  2. Upload the PDF. You can add several files for the same number, and they go out as one fax.
  3. Enter the fax number with area code, e.g. 202 555 0100 for the US.
  4. Enter your email for the send report and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
  5. The send report arrives by email with date, time, destination number and an image of the first page.

Why not use a fax app from the App Store?

Many Mac fax apps are subscriptions or sell credit packs. That makes sense if you fax every week. For a few faxes a year, paying per fax is usually cheaper, and you don't install anything. Compare the options in send a fax without a subscription.

Common problems

  • Pages look tiny or cut off: export at Letter or A4 size, not as a slideshow or poster.
  • Grey photo of a document: use the scanner mode instead of a normal photo, it gives a clean black-and-white page.
  • Fax didn't go through: check the number and see what to do when a fax fails. If a fax can't be delivered, you get an automatic refund.
