Quick answer

Scan the document with the Notes or Files app (Scan Documents), then open sendfaxfast.com in Safari, upload the PDF, enter the fax number and pay for that one fax. You don't need a fax app, an account or a subscription. A send report arrives by email.

An iPad is actually a good fax device: the big screen makes it easy to check a scan, and you can sign a page with your finger or an Apple Pencil. iPadOS has no fax feature of its own, but you don't need one.

Step 1: Scan the document

If the document is on paper:

  1. Open the Notes app, create a new note and tap the camera icon, then Scan Documents. In the Files app, you find the same option in the menu (three dots).
  2. Hold the iPad over the page. It detects the edges and takes the picture. Scan all pages in one go.
  3. Tap Save. In Notes, share the scan and choose Save to Files so you have a PDF.

Good light and a dark, flat surface make the scan cleaner. Black text on white gives the best fax result.

Step 2: Send it from Safari

  1. Open sendfaxfast.com in Safari.
  2. Upload the PDF from Files. Photos (JPG, PNG) work too. Several files are combined into one fax.
  3. Need a signature? Sign on screen after uploading and drag the signature into place. This is a simple image signature, not a qualified electronic signature.
  4. Enter the fax number with the country code and your email for the send report.
  5. Pay with Apple Pay, card, Google Pay or PayPal. The fax goes out right after payment.

Should I install a fax app?

For an occasional fax, usually not. Many fax apps in the App Store work with weekly or monthly subscriptions or credit packs. If you only fax now and then, check the terms before you start a trial. In the browser you pay for one fax and that's it.

Before you send: double-check every digit of the fax number. A wrong digit can send your document to a stranger's fax machine.

Frequently asked questions

Does the iPad have a built-in fax feature?

No. iPadOS can scan documents, but it cannot send a fax by itself. You need an online fax service, which you can use in Safari.

Can I fax from an iPad without Wi-Fi?

You need internet access. A cellular iPad works with mobile data as well as Wi-Fi.

Can I sign a document on my iPad before faxing?

Yes. On sendfaxfast.com you can sign on screen after uploading. You can also use Markup in the Files app before uploading.

Can I fax a photo from my iPad?

Yes. JPG and PNG files are accepted. A scan from Notes or Files usually gives a cleaner result than a normal photo.
